One Night Feast
Scuola Grande di San Rocco
Third year, Second Semester Project
Our brief was to design a one night pop up restaurant within the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice to cater for 20 trustee members of the Venice Biennale.
The feast is to resemble the 1529 Banquet for Faresse at the House of Este. Banquets of the Renaissance were known to combine art, music, theatre & architecture with food, so to indulge all the senses - this original banquet, commenced with a play.
This became the driving force behind my scheme which began to play on the similarities and cross overs behind theatre and the idea of a banquet. There is compossed in several different scenes, split up with intermissions. While banquets consist of several different meals split up with aperitifs and digestifs. This understanding formed the overall scheme for my design where each of the five courses would be served in a different scene.
Commencing the night at the rear of the Scuola, furthest away from the alter, the trustees are submersed into a complete escape from the surroundings of the Scuola. Through the journey that takes place through the different scenes, the interaction between the pop-up structure and the Scuola begins to deepen, allowing the trustees to uncover a story - the story being the Scuola. Through the use of "behind the scenes" silhouette, the service and functions of the night are achieved.
